Sometimes, it can be hard for students to grasp what you want them to be doing with their body and it’s difficult for them to understand where their weaknesses are or where their alignment is heading in to injury-zone.
This can result in you as the yoga teacher, losing confidence in your ability to communicate or doubting your influence.
Learning the art of hands-on yoga assisting adds a powerful form of non-verbal communication that cuts through the noise in your students’ heads, instantly pulls them in to their bodies and creates breakthroughs in poses. With careful and precise hands-on assists, you can transform their yoga poses with just a few touches and create “a-ha” moments where they really 'get' how a pose should take form and feel in their body.
I’m Dylan Ayaloo, leader of the LLiV Hands On Assisting Program, and I'm truly passionate about the power of touch in both creating growth in your students' yoga practice, and as a tool to massively grow your skill, influence and confidence as a yoga teacher.
Discover core principles of hands on assisting that you can apply across multiple poses. These will become the foundation upon which you can build your assisting practice and once learned, will give you the tools to assist 90% of yoga poses
In order to apply hands-on assists you need to know what yoga poses should look ideally like – you’ll gain a detailed knowledge of alignment for over 60 poses You’ll also gain an appreciation of what common body issues prevent people being able to reach ideal alignment. Learn how body shape, size and proportion all influence yoga poses and how to vary your assists appropriately. It isn’t as simple as ‘1 assist fits all’ Learn the 5 assists you must never do Discover how to meet students at their level - when faced with a student who has multiple areas of concern, learn how to build a combination of effective yoga assists that help them gain more benefit from the pose whilst working within their body’s limitations. Likewise, you’ll learn how to support more advanced students, even where you can’t do the pose you’re assisting Learn how to pick the assist that will have the most impact on the student and create that breakthrough moment for them
Hand on assisting is not about correcting or fixing or making your students feel inadequate. Gain an understanding of how to be sensitive to students, to support them and leave them feeling success and progress in their yoga practice so they come back for more Refine your seeing – learn to really notice what is going on in bodies so you can be intelligent in where you choose to apply your assists. It’s not always where you think it is! Discover that size doesn’t matter – learn how to use your own posture and body weight to gain more leverage in the assist regardless of the size of you or your the student Protect yourself – find out how to protect injury-susceptible areas like your lower back, wrists and knees when giving assists Sometimes you’ll find you’re not in the right position at the right time, so for common poses you’ll learn multiple assists which achieve the same outcome Learn the power of intention and energetic communication and how this can be just as powerful as touch Discover which parts of your body not to use in assisting and ‘how’ to touch your student so they don’t have a creepy or weird experience
Never find yourself short of teaching content for your classes. Discover how to really "see" your students and read their bodies. Then, translate this into un-ending and relevant material to guide your students in a way that will have them feeling like you're speaking individually to them and addressing their personal needs.
Well, it's simply fantastic.
I was expecting to be working hard physically and learn loads of new technical things, and on that level, I was served generously. What I did not expect was that the "mechanical" work would open the door to so much potential for more care and listening and trusting and respecting, and having fun...
I did not expect that 3 days "only" would provide ways to convey so much power, love and care for myself and others. It brings more life to a very important component of teaching which is compassion, and you give it with your body. How wonderful is that?
I sincerely encourage you guys to do it at some point.
This course is all about the power of touch so you will both give and receive lots of it. This is not about studying textbooks or pure theory and you’ll apply and experience your learnings immediately
You’ll receive feedback from your buddies when you assist them so you have qualitative feedback you can respond to right away You’ll have live class experience where you learn how to move like a ninja around students and think quickly on your feet. This learning environment is invaluable
Starting to give hands-on assists can be like beginning yoga: you’re not quite sure what hand to put where or wrap around what. So, we’ll never leave you unsupported. All assists will be given under the guidance of myself or other experienced assistants, and in the live class, you’ll shadow us
You’ll learn a lot and it can be tough to assimilate it all over a weekend so we offer opportunities to shadow an experienced assistant in live classes beyond the course
